To whomever it may concern,


My name is Benjamin Storer, and I am a licensed teacher from the UK with eight years of teaching experience from my home country, Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Manila, Philippines. I have a degree in English Language and Linguistics, and a Postgraduate in Teaching (PGCE) specifically catering for Secondary Schools (Grades 6-12). I am currently completing my online MA in Education with the University of Northampton which is a year-long course, expected to be completed by the end of 2023.


In the UK, I was a Secondary English Language and Literature teacher for Years 7-11 (Grades 6-10) for two years at Hartshill School, Nuneaton, using the Cambridge and IGCSE curricula. I had become an NQT by the end of the second year of working there as I was completing both my PGCE (Schools Direct for English Secondary) and my second qualifying teaching year portfolio. I gained so much initial experience with student needs, pedagogical standards and practices, and learned how school systems operate in the UK public sector and reflected back on all of this after travelling abroad.


In Cambodia, I worked at CIA FIRST International School, Phnom Penh, as a Grade 5 Homeroom Academic Support Program (ASP) team member, and was for three, using the UbD and CCSS curricula. I specialised in the creation of scaffolded and differentiated strategies and materials to enable low-ability students to understand the English language in any given context.  I coordinated and collaborated with three staff members in Grade 5 on how best to meet the needs of the ASP students, setting goals and targets from them, and supporting them through their academic and social-emotional developments. Furthermore, I was the UES MAP coordinator for the school, which meant I worked with an external testing body, then analysed these against the school’s own internal data sets to see whether the school was achieving the same standards.


I was then employed by The British School Manila (BSM) as a KS2 Cover Supervisor and Private Tutor for BSM students, particularly those who are trying to pass the entrance exam and those with educational difficulties. Before and during hybrid learning, I was tasked with looking after BSM staff children as they were teaching their own respective classes and therefore covered every day to meet the needs of all involved. Any safeguarding or child protection issues were directly reported to the safeguarding officer for both the staff children and the children I would tutor online. The online tutoring consisted of hourly sessions teaching Maths and English, and giving special attention to mental well-being and time for reflection. Their progress has been praised by colleagues, peers, students, and families alike and it makes me proud to support those in need of my expertise.


Thereafter I worked as a Grade 3 Homeroom teacher under the IB PYP program from August 2022. This involved a mixture of three curricula: the German National, the IB PYP and the Cambridge International. During my time here, I have taught German children EAL at Grade 3 and Grade 4 level in the German Section, as well as managed my own Grade 3 Homeroom classroom for the PYP Section. With the IB Curriculum, it is nearmost entirely student-led and is facilitated through an inquiry-based approach; this means that whatever questions students want to know about the specific Unit of Inquiry, I then create, scaffold and differentiate content for them to learn. This was then also paired with the Cambridge National Curriculum for assessment scores as evidence of their knowledge gained. I worked in a hands-on collaborative setting between teachers, parents and students alike, oftentimes planning for big events such as the PYP assemblies, the Christmas Bazaar and special German National Holidays like Sankt Martin.


To summarise, I feel I would be a great asset to your educational establishment. I am looking to enhance my career knowing I have the initiative, intellect, and passion to do so. I believe that I already possess the knowledge, experience, and aptitude to thrive in a position at your school if given the opportunity.
