Overview

The AI & Automation Lead serves as the practice lead and subject‑matter expert responsible for shaping, guiding, and delivering AI‑ and automation‑enabled improvements across the organization, with future growth into client-facing delivery. This role builds deep understanding of stakeholder goals and operational realities, translates them into clear solution approaches, and ensures that implemented systems achieve measurable business outcomes.

As the leader of the AI & Automation development team, the Lead provides direction, prioritization, and structured delivery guidance. The role emphasizes solution sequencing, requirements clarity, validation planning, and the use of scalable, integration‑first patterns. By aligning business needs with technical execution, the Lead ensures that each initiative is both technically sound and operationally meaningful.

In early stages of the practice, the AI & Automation Lead focuses primarily on internal initiatives that improve efficiency, strengthen decision‑making, and accelerate adoption of modern tools and automation capabilities. As the practice matures, the Lead plays a central role in shaping reusable patterns, playbooks, and delivery approaches that enable selective client‑collaborative work and lay the foundation for future external service offerings.

Over time, this role contributes directly to building a sustainable, repeatable AI and Automation services portfolio. By combining stakeholder engagement, disciplined delivery leadership, and continuous learning, the AI & Automation Lead helps the organization expand its capabilities and confidently serve a growing variety of small and mid‑sized business needs.

Key Responsibilities

Practice Leadership

• Support the CTO with evidence of value and subject-matter-expert conversations that increase meaningful AI and automation engagements.
• Own the AI & Automation initiatives portfolio to maintain a transparent pipeline. 
• Supervise and lead the AI & Automation developer team.
• Act as the voice of the customer in development work planning, prioritization, and expected benefits.
• Sequence the pipeline to balance outcomes delivery, internal capability-building, and future external service offerings.
• Regularly report progress and realized stakeholder benefits.

Stakeholder Engagement and Discovery 

• Collaborate with stakeholders to understand present environments, processes, and automation opportunities.
• Support decision-makers by quantifying outcome objectives prior to significant build efforts. 

Solution Design and Requirements 

• Coordinate with the Senior Developer on architecture decisions, milestones, and validation plans.
• Translate business needs into clear design requirements and acceptance criteria for the development team.
• Use integration-first approaches that prioritize leveraging the existing resources within environments.

Risk, Governance, and Supportability

• Partner with the Operations and Security teams to ensure designs respect data access, identity, and audit requirements. 
• Ensure all solutions adhere to data security, privacy, and compliance standards.
• Define dependencies, management, and rollback/emergency-stop criteria so implemented designs are trustworthy and maintainable.
• Plan for operational monitoring, security monitoring, and maintenance overhead introduced by automations.

Readiness, Training, and Change Adoption 

• Build and deliver enablement for end-users and managers to drive measurable adoption of AI and automation in targeted functions.
• Capture lessons learned into repeatable playbooks for future delivery efficiency and client-facing service offers.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Business Process Automation: Established experience in business process analysis driving automation outcomes. Proven ability to quantify return-on-investment and tie development and adoption efforts to measurable benefits and outcomes.
• Practice Leadership Discipline: Discussions with stakeholders, business casing benefits, and realization tracking suitable for executive audiences and review.
• Development Team Delivery Leadership: Strong backlog leadership or equivalent approach managing offshore developers and contributors. Fluent in defining acceptance criteria and validation plans that anchor to stakeholder business metrics.
• Stakeholder Communication: Excellent stakeholder-facing skills. Ability to listen and ask questions to understand. Ability to present complex concepts clearly.
• Systems Integration: Demonstrated success leading development initiatives that integrate with and extend existing application platforms and information sources.
• AI & Automation Development: Hands-on familiarity with how engineering teams implement using modern Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft Copilot, and other AI toolsets and automation platforms.
