    School of Special Educational Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSEN:BE) is seeking to establish a pool of Student Support Officers at their North Metropolitan Engagement Centres, for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year.

    About the role

    Student Support Officers will work with staff and support students within the Engagement Centre context both onsite and in an outreach capacity within schools. Student Support Officers are responsible for assisting in individualised case coordination of support services for students with complex and challenging behaviours to enable them to form positive connections and increase their engagement with learning activities. Suitable applicants will ideally have the ability to conduct dynamic risk assessments and directly support students in this context.

    Under the guidance of SSEN:BE teachers, Student Support Officers may be required to provide advice and support to school-based staff on strategies for engagement, transitions, social and emotional learning and inform plan development and implementation for individual and small groups of students. Suitable applicants will ideally have previous experience in a similar position working with children and adolescents with complex and challenging behaviours. Strong communication and interpersonal skills combined with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a case management team is critical to this role. A displayed experience in de-escalation, Trauma Awareness in Schools, Positive Handling and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Strategies would be highly desirable.

    Suitable applicants will research current issues for young people, participate in projects and provide written reports as required. It may also involve travel across our school and the transportation of students. Suitable applicants will be required to attend associated training, professional learning and school development days at our main school site which operates out of Statewide Services in Padbury which may include overnight stays. Suitable applicants will need to hold and maintain a current WA drivers licence.

    About SSEN:BE

    SSEN:BE is part of the network of specialist schools that operates under the Statewide Services pillar of Service Delivery. SSEN:BE provides educational support and services with schools for students who present with extreme, complex and challenging behaviours across a K-12 context. A continuum of consultative services including professional learning, consultative support and direct and indirect student support is delivered through Engagement Centres and the Midland Learning Academy (MLA). The services of Engagement Centres and MLA are coordinated through SSEN:BE which provides the administrative structure that oversees and manages these services as a statewide model of supports for schools, teachers and students. The services complement other teams working in networks, regions and schools, supporting a greater number of students across the State. Support is available across the public school system.

    Engagement Centres coordinate the K-12 provision of the following three services:

  • Professional learning to improve student engagement and behaviour
  • Consultative support for schools needing additional assistance with planning for those students with very complex needs
  • Direct and indirect support for individual students exhibiting the most extreme, challenging and complex needs.
  • Suitable applicants may be considered for vacancies to work at and across the following Engagement Centres in the North Metropolitan region:

  • Reid St Engagement Centre - located in Bassendean
  • Heathridge Engagement Centre - located in Heathridge
  • Redcliffe Engagement Centre - located in Balga
